Vermont Property Taxes to rise?
The Burlington Free Press Contains an opinion piece today by Tom Pelham (Vermont's Tax Commisioner) in which he expresses his belief that for many property owners taxes are heading up. He points out that despite the fact the State portion of property tax has been reduced by 7-cents for this year property values have gone up significantly and thus the net result is an increased tax bill.

Another factor is the prebate program in Vermont which caps the amount of property tax primary homeowners pay based on income. The program is funded by the State education property tax and thus nonprimary properties, and businesses subsidize the lower income homeowners.
Property taxes continue to be a major problem in Vermont and in determining affordablity of owning property for many individuals.
